Fred Machetanz was born in Kenton, Ohio, on February 20, 1908. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio State University. Machetanz first came to Alaska in 1935 when his uncle Charles Traeger, owner of a trading post in Unalakleet, offered him a free six week trip. He stayed for two years because he was interested in the landscape in Alaska. Sara Burleson Machetanz (June 25, 1918- ) was born in Johnson City, Tennessee and was educated at East Tennessee State College. Glenn F. Massay was born in New Brighton, Pennsylvania in 1931. He earned degrees in history from California State College (B.S., 1959), and West Virginia University (M.A., 1962 and Ph.D., 1970). Massay taught in West Virginia before pursuing a career in college administration and moving to Alaska in 1974.
